Folger-specific note
For Folger copy 19, the issue is indeterminate, as formulated by William B. Todd, "Issues and states of the Second Folio and Milton's epitaph on Shakespeare," Studies in bibliography, v. 5 (1952-53), p. 81-108. Wants both [superscript pi]A2 (title leaf) and [superscript pi]A5 ("Effigies" leaf).
Wants also all other prelims., [superscript pi]A1,3,4,6 and *⁴.
Wants port. (on title page).
Also wants: part of Temp. (A1-6); E1; Q1,2; all of AYL and part of Shrew (Q3-T1, T6); Z1; i3.4; u1; most of Hen. VIII (u5-x4, x6, and y1,6); and 3d3,4 (including the colophon).
Rich. III (s1-u4) and then John (a1-b5) are misbound as the last two Histories. Leaves I1-5 are loose and protruding from the textblock and are accordingly damaged and discolored at the fore-edge and tail.
Mutilated are: d6 and l4, affecting text; 2y2,3 and 3b3, affecting catchwords and rules; and 3d1,2, affecting text very slightly and catchwords and rules. From 2v4 to the end, worming touches text on many leaves and affects readings slightly on 2z3 and very slightly on 3a2, 3b1,2, and 3c1,2,5. Other imperfections affect text slightly on m4 and very slightly on D4, H3, 2B5, o5, s4, and 2v1.
Manuscript additions include inscriptions "Edw: Dering June 1721" (front flyleaf recto) and "Mem.--Novemr 5th 1731. Then paid old Mary in full to the 25th of March 1731--03:00:00" (rear free endpaper verso).
In a calf binding, blind-tooled in a panel design, probably contemporaneous with the earlier inscription.
Front flyleaf verso stamped "Edward Dowden Library".
