Folger-specific note
In Folger copy 52, [superscript pi]A1 wanting; supplied in facsim. Leaf 3d2 patched at fore-edge, affecting text slightly; 3d3 patched at inner edge, affecting text; 3d4 cut down, excising colophon, and mounted. Port. (on title page) in state 3. Imperfections affect text very slightly on D5, g1, k2, y4, and 3a6. The variance of the present state of this copy from earlier descriptions of it (Edward Hartley sale catalogue, Sotheby's, Mar. 25, 1925, and notes penciled on the rear pastedown) and the presence of many binder's stubs, passim, indicate extensive doctoring of this copy. The precise extent of the alterations cannot be determined, but evidently supplied from another copy or copies are H3, H4, s5, 3c5, and 3c6. Full documentation on file. Bookplate of David Garrick. On a book label: "... part of the Library of David Garrick ... bequeathed by Mrs. Eva Maria Garrick, his Relict, to George Frederick Beltz, ... one of the Executors of her Will." Book stamp of Edward Hartley. Tipped in (front free endpaper) is a proof of Hartley's description of this copy in Athenaeum, Aug. 24, 1901, 264 (which was preceded by a query by Hartley about the collation of Fo. 2 in Athenaeum, Aug. 3, 168). Tipped in (ibid.) is Hartley's manuscript "Collation of 2nd Folio ..." based on W.T. Lowndes, Bibliographer's manual, rev. H.G. Bohn (1869), 2256-57. Accompanied by related correspondence, manuscript notes, newspaper clippings, and a port. of "Mrs. Garrick" from Lady's Magazine (1831), as accumulated by Hartley (perhaps some by Beltz)--housed with the documentation of this copy.
