Folger-specific note
Folger copy 32 is a doctored copy. It is nominally of the first issue, as formulated by William B. Todd, "Issues and states of the Second Folio and Milton's epitaph on Shakespeare," Studies in bibliography, v. 5 (1952-53), p. 81-108. However, the issue cannot be definitively determined. This copy wants [superscript pi]A2 (title leaf) but contains [superscript pi]A5 ("Effigies" leaf) proper to the first issue (in state Ib).

Wants also [superscript pi]A1,3,4. Supplied in the place of [superscript pi]A1,2(title leaf),3,4 are facsims. of the leaves bearing the corresponding text in the 1st Folio, respectively [superscript pi]A1, [superscript pi]A1+1 (title leaf; with facsim. port. on a separate piece pasted on), [superscript pi]A2, and [superscript pi]A3.

Wants also 3d4 (including the colophon); supplied is a facsim. of the leaf bearing the corresponding text in the 1st Folio (3b6).

Leaves supplied from another copy are: I3.4, distinctively stained and (I3 recto) atypically emended in manuscript; a3, with a watermark that redounds that in a4 and atypically stained; l1, with a watermark that redounds that in l6, short, and distinctively soiled; l2, with a watermark that redounds that in l5 and distinctively soiled; 2o1.6, narrow and distinctively soiled; 2r3, with a watermark that redounds that in 2r4, short, and distinctively soiled; 2y6, short, narrow, and distinctively soiled; and 3a3-3d3, distinctively stained. Annotated and inscribed passim in 17th-cent. and 18th-cent. hands (list on file). Inscriptions include the signature of James Wightwick (17th-cent.), d5 recto, d5 verso, and 3d1 verso. Other inscriptions: "John Hodgetts ... de drury lane ..." (17th-cent.), 2c2 recto; "James Low" (17th-cent.), d5 recto; and "John Davies" (18th-cent.), 2k6 verso.
