Folger-specific note
Folger copy 58 is nominally of the first issue, as formulated by William B. Todd, "Issues and states of the Second Folio and Milton's epitaph on Shakespeare," Studies in bibliography, v. 5 (1952-53), p. 81-108. However, the issue cannot be definitively determined. This copy wants [superscript pi]A2 (title leaf) but contains [superscript pi]A5 ("Effigies" leaf) proper to the first issue (in state Ib). Wants port. (on title page). Wants s4 and 3d3,4 (including colophon). Leaves c3,4, i6, and 3c2 are mutilated and patched, affecting text; text on c3,4 and i6 wanting or covered by patch supplied in manuscript Other imperfections affect text slightly on t1 and very slightly on 15 other leaves (list on file). Manuscript additions include: (1) reproduction signature "William Shakespeare" (17th-cent.), slip mounted onto the recto of a front flyleaf (which flyleaf is mounted onto [superscript pi]A1 verso); (2) inscription "Jno. Ward" [the English actor, 1704?-1773]; (3) inscription "Charles Lomax" (18th-cent.), A1 recto, and probably in his hand (4) account of the Chandos portrait of Shakespeare, dated 1781, [superscript pi]A1 verso, and (5) in the same hand a list of "Editions of single plays in 4to.", flyleaf inserted between [superscript pi]A1,3, recto and verso; (6) inscription "Mary Savage" (early 18th-cent.), [superscript pi]A1 verso; (7) inscription "Eleanor Breaket" (18th-cent.), P6 verso; (8) "John Tiler of Malverne 1690", 2n1 recto; (9) textual annotations, in various hands (18th-cent.), passim (list on file).
