Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "14. JOUVENET NOEL. The family of Charles Patin. - Padua, 1684. A famous portrait of the illustrious French family of intellects, collectors, antique dealers and numismatists who lived in Padua at the end of the 18th century, engraved in copper by Joseph Juster after a painting by the painter Noel Jouvenet. The picture portrays Charles Patin and his bride Madeleine with daughters Charlotte-Catherine and Gabrielle-Charlotte. Charles Patin (1633-1693), physician and distinguished professor of surgery at the University of Padua, distinguished himself, together with Vallisneri, as a promoter of initiatives aimed at providing women with access to education. From 1674 he was a member of the Accademia dei Ricovrati in Padua where he favored the admission of some French female scholars and literates (including Mademoiselle de Scudéry and Madame Salvan de Saliez), and of his daughters Gabrielle Charlotte and Charlotte Catherine. He also published writings in honor of Elena Cornaro Piscopia. The painting evokes the female model of the ladies of the Patin household, with writer Charlotte Catherine showing a book and Gabrielle Charlotte holding an armillary sphere. The print, with the signature of Noel Jouvenet, was inserted in the work "Tabellae selectae ac explicatae," compiled by Charlotte-Catherine Patin, which illustrates the family's collection of paintings and from other important Venetian collections. In this version, the signature of the engraver has been removed. The painting is in a frame. " Ordered from Libreria Ant.
