Folger-specific note
Folger copy: leaves [z]1 and [z]10 left blank by printer. Folger copy lacks leaf [a]1, blank, and leaves [u]1 and [u]10; on leaves [z]1 and [z]10, left blank, text has been supplied by hand (watermarks show these leaves are originally part of the book); all leaves washed and bleached, causing brittling of paper, some loss of printed text, of all manuscript annotations and of handwritten text. Initials, paragraph marks, and capital strokes provided in red throughout; 2 notes in same paint on leaf [a]2r. Extensive manuscript notes of commentary with manicules and brackets in several hands, illegible from bleaching of leaves. Coat of arms of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl Sunderland on binding, and shelfmark "KK.3.112" of the Sunderland library at head of front flyleaf and on leaf [a]2r (no. 13297 in the Puttick and Simpson sale catalog, 1883); bookplate of W.T. Smedley; purchased in 1924. In an eighteenth century calf binding with the arms of Charles Spencer, Earl of Sunderland gold tooled on both covers; evidence of finding tabs on leaves [a]3, [M]1, and [Q]10; edges stained red.
