Folger-specific note
Leaves a1 and 2h6, blank, lacking; edges trimmed, slightly affecting manuscript notes. First initial in blue with red penwork infill; other initials and paragraph marks at beginning of chapters provided in red paint throughout. Early manuscript notes in English in brown ink at beginning of a selection of chapters, each giving a brief summary of the story contents; a list of English first names, on leaf p8v, all of them in cipher (with 1 to 5 cross-strokes on the letter p to represent a, e, i, o, u); a few drawings on leaves k8v and l1r; the word "Pape" has been crossed out on leaf m8v. In a Russia leather binding; upper edge of leaf a2 (bearing inscription?) has been cut out; repaired. Sets of handwritten lines on verso of last leaf, with other notes and several ownership inscriptions reading "Liber M. Ric. Stubbs", "W[?] Halton", and "... Thomas Goodwin est huius libri verus posseser"; bookplate of Edward Shipperdson (no. 908 in the Sotheby sale catalog of his library, April 1887).
