Folger-specific note
Edges have been trimmed, affecting manuscript notes; some worming in the 1st gathering, slightly affecting text. Initials and a few capital strokes provided in red paint on leaves a2v and a4r. Manuscript notes in several hands in brown ink, brackets, some underlining, and finding notes; a few guide-letters have been added by hand in capital spaces; each occurrence of the Latin equivalent of words "pope" and its synonyms, "saint", and "martyr" has been crossed out in brown ink throughout the 2 works bound in this volume (except on the title page); other words have sometimes been substituted by hand; several inscriptions on t.p. in different hands, illegible. Top edge of 1st leaf, probably bearing a mark of ownership, has been cut out and replaced; bookstamp on title page of Narcissus Luttrell (no. 1780 in the Sotheby sale catalog of his library, March 1786); pencilled note on verso of front free endpaper "Lot 21 Sotheby's Apr. 30 [...] May 7", referring to the sale of the collection of Richard Farmer? (no. 1844 in the Sotheby sale catalog of his library, May 1798). In an 18th century Russia leather binding; gilt edges show evidence of previous coloring and imperfect ploughing in the previous binding; repaired. Bookplate with motto "Credunt quod vident" and coat of arms of the Eliott family, of Stobs (shelfmark "E3" added in pencil, surrounding the coat of arms); purchased in 1928.
