Of the sixteen letters, fourteen are signed by Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton. The editor, Sir David Dalrymple's, 'Advertisement' explains "The correspondence was conducted on the part of Cecil by Lord Henry Howard afterwards Earl of Northampton".
The other two letters are signed by James VI of Scotland.
