ESTC staff note
First line of verse: "What a pity it is that so worthy a nation,". A MS. note in the Bodleian Library tract volume, in which this song is found, suggests the author is George Villiers; at least three George Villiers are known to have lived between 1785 and 1790, the period during which all the songs in the tract volume were composed by the same poet. This song in the volume is bound between a song dated 1786 and another dated: March, 9th 1787
