Folger-specific note
Promptbook used for 20 Nov. 1779 Drury Lane production (Langhans). Possibly used for a provincial or amateur production, possibly for the 12 March 1774 Covent Garden production (Langhans) or a 1780s Haymarket production (Burnim). Notes by David Garrick (Burnim, Langhans) and William Hopkins (Langhans). Manuscript cast list for an undetermined 1770s production (Langhans). On title-page: the subtitle "The winter's tale" has been cut out and "Sheep shearing" added in ink. Scenic indications for the 1st scene, p. [1], and for Act III, scene [3], p. 54, include "Bon Ton" in ink. Garrick's Bon Ton, or, High life above stairs was first performed in 1775 (Langhans). Manuscript text on p. 41 is similar to the manuscript version of Garrick's alteration (G.W. Stone, Garrick's handling of Shakespeare's plays, l938, v. 1, leaf 262). Formerly owned by J.O. Halliwell-Phillipps, Warwick Castle Library. Reclassified from FSL Prompt F24.
