Verse - "Since you resign'd your dear commission".
A political satire.
The characters and events alluded are are difficult to identify, as well as the date. The main character resigned his commission to shun an Irish expedition: perhaps Charles Talbot, Duke of Shrewsbury, who was called by William III "the king of hearts", and who resigned the lord-lieutenancy of Ireland in October 1700. The line "The Queen will find when call'd to rule": Princess Annes̀€ succession to the throne was confirmed by the Act of settlement, June 1701. These events would seem to date the poem to between June 1701 and March 1702, in which month William III died.
Reproduction of original from British Library.
