Folger-specific note
Ordered from Christopher Edwards, D9471, 2021-04-28, purchased on eBay. From dealer's description: "GRENEWELL, Elizabeth. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, TO HER HUSBAND NICHOLAS GRENWELL. Eggleston, co. Durham, 17 April 1689. Manuscript in ink, small square 4to (155 x 157mm), one page, with address on verso; damaged with some holes, and rather frail, but otherwise complete. An attractive and affectionate letter from Elizabeth Grenewell to her husband Nicholas Grenwell (the name was presumably more normally spelt Greenwell). They lived at Eggleston, co. Durham, and Elizabeth is writing to Nicholas at 'Foord', which must be Greenwell Ford, an estate near Lanchester, about 5 miles north-west of Durham itself. There is a record of a Nicholas Greenwell (d. 1736), who married Elizabeth Addison, daughter of John Addison of Egglestone, on 18 December 1688: this must be the couple, and a cynic might explain the affectionate nature of the letter from the fact that they had only been married four months. Mentioning the christening of 'John Aslebe' on Thursday 25th, she says: 'I do not have anny thing of an invitashon but if thay should I would not for ten times the ualle [value?] of that be deprived of your compenie so perethe [prayeth?] my Deare do not let that be anny hendranc so sone as Opertunite will sarve this is all from her who Is your loving wife Elizabeth Grenewell' [some letters and words conjectural]."
