[c.1684.] Mezzotint (sheet 28.8 x 33.2cm;platemark 25 x 34 cm) a few negligible dust marks in margins,very good. A fine mezzotint depicting the artist and collector Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680), the most prominent portrait painter of the court of Charles II. Dateable to c. 1684, this print after a self-portrait by Lely was made by the accomplished English engraver Isaac Becket (1652-1688), one of the first English masters of mezzotint.This is the scarce first impression of this plate, bearing the imprint “Sold byAlex: Browne at ye. Blew ballcony in little queen street,” in- dicating that is was published byAlexander Browne (d.1706), miniature painter, auctioneer and one of the first in London to publish mezzotints.
