Purchase made possible by The Elizabeth L. Eisenstein Acquisitions Fund. From dealer's description: "Exchequer receipt signed by Lancelot Burton confirming payment of thirty pounds from John Hals, being “the first part of the money to be contributed by him for six tickets to be drawn” in the Civil List Lottery of 1713.] [London, 4 November 1713.] Printed receipt, single sheet. Folio (19.5 x 30cm) completed in manuscript, signed at foot “L. Burton”, some slight marginal dustiness and fraying (not touching text), very good. Bearing the signature of the financier Lancelot Burton, one of the official receivers for the “Civil List” Lottery of 1713, this printed receipt dated 4 November 1713 records the payment of thirty pounds by John Hals, being “the first part of the money to be contributed by him for six tickets to be drawn.” We have managed to trace Hals, one of the new class of brokers that emerged from London’s financial revolution in the 1690s, advertising his services in the The Examiner (Thursday 21 June 1711): “John Hals, removed from the office next Jonathans Coffee-house, to his office near the Union Coffee-house in Exchange Alley; who buyeth and selleth lottery tickets, East India bonds, debentures, Navy, transport and victualling bills, tallies, and other public securities ...” Ordered from Samuel Gedge, D9409, 2020-09-11, List - Firsts Online September 2020, item 290.
