"The letters and papers now calendared are of considerably earlier date than those dealt with in Report XI., appendix IV., and ... may be looked upon as forming a pendent to the manuscripts of the Marquese of Drogheda (Report IX. app. II.), for they consist almost entirely of documents relating to the great Loftus cause, whch began shortly after Wentworth's appointment as lord deputy of Ireland, and lasted for nearly half a century."--Introd.
