Note
Edited by J. T. Fowler.
Authorship unknown, but Thomas Baker, in a manuscript note in ms. Harl. 7047, one of the sources of this text, writes that "it is not improbable that George Bates, the last register of the house, was the author, of which there are some intimations in the collection itself." cf. Pref., p. xiv.
Seven manuscripts have been used, two as forming the text, and five as affording various readings: I. Ms. Cosin, a manuscript upon paper, marked B. ii. 11, in the Episcopal library of Durham founded by Bishop Cosin. II. A manuscript roll belonging to Thomas Jefferson Hogg and John Hogg of Norton in the county of Durham. III. Ms. Hunter, no. 45, upon paper. IV. Ms. Hunter, no. 44, tract 10, upon paper. V. Ms. Lawson, belonging to Sir John Lawson, bart., of Brough Hall, Catterick. VI. Ms. Cambridge, belonging to Cambridge univeristy library, marked G G 2 15. VII. British museum ms. harl. 7047--cf. Pref., p. [ix]-xiv.
A considerable portion of the record here presented was published in a curtailed and modernized shape by John Davies in 1672 under the title: The ancient rites and monuments of the monastical, & cathedral church of Durham. In 1733, Dr. Christopher Hunter made it the basis of a little volume which he published under the title: Durham Cathedral, as it was before the dissolution of the monastery; containing an account of the rites, customs and ceremonies used therein. In 1743, Dr. Hunter professed to publish a second edition of the above book, but the title only was new: The history of the cathedral church of Durham as it was before the dissolution. In 1767, Hunter's edition was reprinted by a bookseller in Durham named Patrick Sanderson with still further deviations from the original, under the title: The antiquities of the abbey or cathedral church of Durham. In 1842, the Surtees society published as v. 15 of its Publications, a new text edited by James Raine from four original manuscripts under the title: A description or briefe declaration of all the ancient monuments, rites, and customes belonginge or beinge within the monastical church of Durham before the suppression. The present edition is a reprint of that, with additions and more accurate text based upon a comparison of more manuscripts--cf. Pref.
"Mickleton's additions to Davies. 1691.": p. 161-168.
"Extracts from a Durham missal written in the fourteenth century": p. 172-191.
"Note on the Sunday procession. by W.H. St. John Hope, M.A.": p. [302]-303.

"Works most frequently quoted in the following notes": p. [192]; "Books mentioned in the text of Rites": p. [304].
