Many of the pieces are taken from well known plays by Shakespeare and others. Five of the twenty-seven drolls in pt. 1 were previously issued in a small volume entitled Actaeon and Diana, by Robert Cox. Kirkman, the probable compiler, in his preface to pt. 2 called Robert Cox "not only the principal actor, but also the contriver and author" of most of the drolls. This reprint is based on the original editions, with reproductions of original title-pages. cf. introd.
Pt. 1, "The bouncing knight" and "The gravemakers" are from Shakespeare's Henry IV, pt. 1 and Hamlet respectively.
Pt. 2, "Bottom the weaver" is from Shakespeare's midsummer night's dream.
