From dealer's description: "Red crayon sketch of the seventeenth century death mask held by the German city of Darmstadt that purports to represent Shakespeare. The image which has been matted shows the death mask as usually seen lying on its side. On the verso is a page of miniscule ink notes comparing Shakespeare with Tolstoy which concludes 'Tolstoy blind to the religious-philosopher he theoretically admired - SHAKESPEARE.' Notes probably executed around the middle of the twentieth century; sketch may be earlier." Ordered from Modern First Editions D9318, 2019-07-01, email quote.
