Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "In Genova, appresso Giuseppe Pavoni. 1601. First edition. 4to (16 x 22cm) 36pp., title-page with large engraving (Doria coat of arms), final leaf with woodcut printer’s mark, a very good, copy, fresh and uncut in contemporary stabsewn paper wrapper, small marginal stain to one corner of back wrapper, light wear to extremities. An excellent, uncut copy of the first edition, rare, of this account of a Genoese-led expedition to attack Algiers headed by the veteran admiral Giovanni Andrea Doria (1539-1606), whose engraved arms are printed on the title-page. Naval forces drawn from a coalition including the Genoese, the Kingdom of Naples, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Papal States and Spain, set out to launch an attack by stealth against Algiers, stronghold of the Barbary pirates. The element of surprise was to be achieved through the assembling of the constituent parts of the naval force at different Mediterranean ports before setting out from Messina in a combined assault. However, due to difficulties in synchronising the various naval squadrons, the departure was delayed until late August, with the eventual attack being hampered by adverse winds. The author Girolamo Franchi di Conestaggio (1530-c.1616), Genoese nobleman, merchant and man of letters, in addition to a detailed account of the planning and execution of the campaign, including lists of naval captains, begins with a history of the piractical city-state of Algiers during the sixteenth century. ICCU records 3 copies only (Biblioteca nazionale Braidense, Milano; Biblioteca nazionale centrale, Roma; Biblioteca universitaria Alessandrina, Roma).
