Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "Getruckt zu Constantz am Bodensee bey Nicolas Kalt. 1599. Second edition in German. 8vo (9.5 x 15.5cm) [7], 150 ff., title printed in red and black within typographic border, last few leaves with small wormhole in margin not touching text, very good in original vellum, gilt-tooled (gilding now oxidised) panels with centrepieces, spine painted black at an early date with remains of original paper label titled in manuscript, all edges red, front pastedown with bookplate and stamp of a Swiss Capuchin library (deaccessioned), light wear to extremities. Describing the celebrations in Rome during the Jubilee of 1575, this rare German translation of an account written by the Spanish Jesuit Raphael Riera (1528-1582) was printed in Germany at Constance (Konstanz) on the Swiss border. Held during the papacy of Gregory XIII, the Jubilee, or Holy Year, of 1575 attracted some 300,000 pilgrims to Rome. Riera describes the main public events of each month including processions, services and ceremonies, together with details of foreign hospices for pilgrims and the activities of different confraternities. The lengthy dedication to Ulrich, abbot of Einseideln, dated 2 June 1598, was written by the translator Bartholomeus Schrenck, apparently a Jesuit then residing at Lucerne in Switzerland."
