Folger-specific note
Purchase made possible by The Charles W. Engelhard Acquisitions Fund. From dealer's description: "Contemporary blind ruled sheep, rubbed, spine chipped, simple brass clasps (one of which is broken), edges speckled red, text generally clean, a few leaves torn, overall very nice original condition. Octavo (153 mm x 100 mm x 40 mm). Text at both ends. Approximately 294 text pages, plus numerous blanks. Written in several different hands; all apparently members of the Buckworth family. This modest looking manuscript holds within its plain covers details of the domestic and business concerns of a wealthy Cambridgeshire family. Despite their prosperity, the Buckworths do not appear to have been given to ostentatious display - at least not in the kitchen. Several members of the Buckworth family attended Trinity College, Cambridge, but others appear to have remained on the land, and scholarly education is not an obvious feature of this manuscript. It does, however, have its own appealingly idiosyncratic and expressive eloquence, especially in the recipe pages. The manuscript is written at both ends. • At the front there are approximately 51 pages of general accounts from the 1670s to the 1690s, followed by an 8-page index for recipes (interspersed with further accounts) and 90 pages of culinary recipes and occasional remedies. At the rear there are approximately 138 pages of accounts, followed by 7 pages of brief biographical notes concerning members of the Buckworth family from the 1650s to the 1690s. Given the dates, place, and names in the text, it appears that this manuscript was compiled by Thomas Buckworth (b. 1656) and Elizabeth Buckworth (né Harris of Sutton), who were living at Wisbech at this time. The accounts all date from the 1670s to the 1690s and are in the same hand (that of Thomas); the recipes are undated and in a different hand (probably Elizabeth's) but would sit comfortably within these dates. The biographical notes are in a third hand, and are probably the latest entries in the volume."
