From dealer's description: "William Shakespeare; Henry Irving; Ellen Terry; Herbert Beerbohm Tree; Forbes Robertson; Osmond Teale [Swan Electric Engraving Co.; Virtue & Co., London publishers] [William Shakespeare: photographs of leading Victorian actors and actresses.]'Modern Shakespearean Celebrities' (folder containing engraved photographs of Shakespearean actors and actresses). Limited to 100 copies. Virtue & Co., City Road, E.C. [London] No date. [Swan Electric Engnraving Co.] Nineteen engravings on India paper, out of a series of twenty (missing is 'OSMOND TEALE . . . KING JOHN'). The engravings are each approximately 13.5 x 20 cm, and each on 25.5 x 16 cm pieces of india paper, laid down on 38 x 28 cm leaves of thick paper. Loosely inserted in 40 x 28.5 cm flapped folder in burgundy ribbed cloth. Before the letters, with no captions, except in four cases the words 'Swan Electric Engraving Co.' The engravings are in fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with the letterpress leaf discoloured and creased, in worn folder. In capitals in gilt on front cover of folder: 'Proofs on India paper. Title, limitation and state are again given on a page of letterpress, which also carries details of publisher at foot: 'London: | Vertue & Co., City Road, E.C.' Beneath the title on the letterpress leaf are listed the twenty plates showing different Shakespearean parts played by a total of fifteen actors and actresses: Miss Ellen Terry (2) as Beatrice, Queen Katherine; Edward Compton as Dromio of Syracuse; F. R. Benson as Theseus; Henry Irving (3), as Shylock, Richard III, Hamlet; Madame Modjeska as Portia [one of the plates a detail from the other]; Miss Ada Rehan as Rosalind; Herbert Beerbohm Tree as Falstaff; Miss Mary Anderson as Perdita; Forbes Robertson as Leontes; Osmond Tearle (1 of 2) as Coriolanus [plate of him as King John missing]; George Rignold as Henry V; Miss Mary Kingsley as Joan of Arc; William Terriss as Henry VIII; Mrs. Stirling as Nurse; Wilson Barrett as Othello.
