Laurence Maidwell of Geddington, Schoolmaster and author of the play The Loving Enemies, c.1680. Maidwell’s controversial Bill for gifting his own Private Estate to the nation in return for a scheme for a Public Academy or Mathematical School to be situated in St. James, London, with himself installed as Governor for life. His Bill provoked a number of very serious objections including that of the School being a front for granting him freedom to settle his own salary without regulation, and to create a monopoly over the national rights to the publishing of printed advertisements forever.
