Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "Bound with: "Realation de la conversion de Milord de Perth". [And:] "Lettre de Monsieur le Duc de Perth, a Monsieur l’abbé de la Trappe". [And:] "Extrait de la lettre circulaire des Religieuses de Chaillot concernant Le Roy D’angleterre".Etched and engraved portrait frontispiece by Edelinck (inscribed ‘ex Libris Josephi Heudelot 1770’ at head); 1–3 blank leaves between each work; all pages ruled in red, the text in neat ms. ink; some light marginal browning, with the occasional insignificant waterstain or inkspot, first few pages a little finger-soiled, ink inscriptions (‘Monsieur Mariagra’, ‘Marcha’) and ms. contents to the flyleaves; contemporary full calf, marbled endpapers, a bit rubbed, headcap, corners, and upper edge skilfully restored. A fine collection of texts written after the death of James II, in Paris, in 1701. The final text here was printed in 1702 (Lettre circulaire des dames religieuses de la Visitation de Chaillot sur les dernières années de la vie, circonstances et les suites de la mort du feu roy d'Angleterre Jacques II), but the others provide evidence of anuscript culture at the exiled Stuart court. The third item, which in fact consists of two letters written by James Drummond, Earl/Duke of Perth, ‘provide the best and most detailed account of the king’s death’ (Oxford DNB) and remained unpublished until 1927." Ordered from Simon Beattie Antiquarian Books D9213, 2018-06-07 ; Catalogue "Recent acquisitions, London International Antiquarian Book Fair, Battersea Evolution, 24–26 May 2018". Purchase made possible by The James B. Sitrick Acquisitions Endowment Fund.
