From dealer's description: "A rare example of a printed seventeenth century receipt for a tax payment, this document records the payment 7 June 1698 by Eleazer Pearson “for and on the behalf of [his] landlord the sum of [five pounds sixteene shillings, & 3d] so much being assessed and charged upon his landlord for the first quarterly payment of the aid granted to His Majesty King William the Third, by virtue of an act of Parliament made in the ninth and tenth of His said Majesties Reign, intituled, An act for granting to His Majesty the sum of one million, four hundred eighty four thousand, and fifteen pounds ... for disbanding forces, paying seamen, and other uses ...” This land tax of 3s. in the pound, levied on valuations made in 1692, was introduced in 1697/8, continuing throughout the eighteenth century.
