From dealer's description: "Ascribing this manuscript to a particular mathematical instrument maker proves challenging given the sheer scarcity of such material and the anonymity surrounding artisanal artefacts. It reads like a series instructions intended for a small knowledgeable audience or an individual, such as an apprentice. These didactic instructions appear to be a guide for the construction of Samuel Foster's computational device known as a dialing scale. The mathematical instrument maker Anthony Thompson is known to have constructed sundials for Samuel Foster, so it seems plausible that this was either written by Thompson himself or one of the small group scientific instrument makers working in England in the 17th century."
