Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "This is a 17th century scribal copy of a work which remained unpublished for well over a century. This manuscript contains selections from the original unpublished work by Waller, with some underlining and manicules. It was probably the only copy in circulation and would have been an important scholarly resource. Given the fact that the scribe has been so selective in their choice, it seems not unreasonable to assume that these passages were intended for inclusion in a history of the turbulent events of the 17th century. During the Civil War, Waller fought on the parliamentary side, but according to this manuscript “On all occasions he Magnifyes the abilityes and speaks highly of ye merits of K. ch. The Martyr”, and he actively supported the restoration of Charles II. Waller’s first-hand account of events and his reasons for shifting allegiances would have been invaluable to any writer attempting at an accurate account of the English Civil War. A larger work than the one here, called “Wallers Apologetical History”, did finally make it into print in 1793 under the title ‘Vindication’."
