Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "This unfinished play dates from the final years of Justin H. McCarthy's life (1859-1936). A prolific writer of novels, stories and plays Justin H. McCarthy habitually worked on several projects at once and his unperformed Cardenio is no exception. Conveniently for the scholar Justin H. McCarthy makes a point of dating his work almost from day to day so it is possible to trace this enterprise through its several incarnations. In the drama the playwright ingeniously seeks to apply the known Cervantes plot relating to Cardenio to an episode in Shakespeare's own life, working in his alleged relationship with William Davenant's mother and setting the drama in and around the Crown Inn in Oxford. There survive here substantial drafts of JHM's first and part of the second act, together with plot summaries for the following two acts. JHM was an intensely self-reflective playwright and this drama is accompanied by a series of near stream of consciousness reflections on the experience of writing his quasi-Shakespearean drama."
