Leeuwenhoek was perhaps the greatest of the early microbiologists and made very many important discoveries, including bacteria and protozoa. He communicated these discoveries to the Royal Society in a series of letters, written in his native Dutch, which continued for over 50 years. They were published in the Society's Philosophical Transactions, then separately.
