Folger-specific note
Bookseller's description: The series of 14 illustrations for A Midsummer Night’s Dream includes Bottom, Quince, Flute, Snout, Snug, Starveling, Puck, Oberon, Titania, Moth, Cobweb, Mustardseed, PeaseBlossom, and a set design of a wooded vale. Intriguingly, these are preceded by an effort to get to grips with a famous Greek statue, the Charioteer of Delphi, which the artist notes would have been known to Shakespeare himself as a source of Greek costume, and whose primitivity certainly inspires the designs for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. A striking reminder of the context of these three plays’ staging is found on the rear pastedown of the volume. On the 3rd of September England had declared war on Hitler, and mass evacuations of civilians from large cities soon followed. A young student has scribbled a terrifying portrait of Hitler on the pastedown along with a verse: “Hitler he only had one ball / his mother, ript it off when he was small” Ordered from: Antiquariat INLIBRIS, Gilhofer Nfg.
