Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "MACBETH (1948) [Program] Orson Welles’ Mercury Production of Macbeth. Al Greenstone: New York, [1948]. Pictorial wrappers, 4to, 16 pp., covers detached bur present with some chipping at their extremities, very good in good+ wrappers. An extremely rare book of which we cannot find any other examples which have ever been available. Orson Welles’ brilliant film of Macbeth, shot on a tiny budget for a small studio (Republic), and with the actors all speaking in a Scottish brogue, did not attract much attention when it was released, and, inevitably, if very few people went to see it (especially in the kinds of showcase cinemas where programs would have been for sale), then it makes sense that very few people ever bought this book, and hence it is now quite rare. Although disregarded at the time of its initial release, and further saddled at the time with the humiliation of having the entire dialogue dubbed into a standard English (with the Scottish accents deleted), decades later, after having received a complete restoration, the film now takes its rightful place as one of the greatest of all film renditions of Shakespeare. With its dramatic, expressionist lighting, the film has richly benefited from its 1980 restoration." Ordered from Walter Reuben, D9069, 2017-02-16, email quote, May 2014 offer.
