Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "MACBETH (1916) Photo, 7 x 5”, various stamps and writing on verso from a now defunct photo archive, not affecting the front, one small chip at top right, overall near very good. This is a precious survivor of a film which is to date believed to be entirely lost---a production of MACBETH starring Sir Herbert Beebohm Tree and Constance Collier, and directed by John Emerson. This photo of Collier as Lady Macbeth documents a performance in a film which, at the time, was highly acclaimed. The 1916 review in the New York Times said, in part:” a fine achievement, one that should be seen by every one at all curious as to the progress the movies have made by this year of grace....The imagination revealed, the impressive panoramas, the fine sense of composition, the cunning uses of impressionism, the prevailing good taste bespeak the presence of a man who is something of an artist. Mr. Emerson prepared the scenario and consulted with Sir Herbert in the direction. The product is among the best things in motion pictures. All the detail of costuming and background is excellent, the vision of the weird sisters a triumph." Ordered from Walter Reuben, D9069, 2017-02-16, email quote, May 2014 offer.
