Folger-specific note
Purchase made possible by The Professor Emile V. Telle Acquisitions Fund. From dealer's description: "A substantial seventeenth century Anglican commonplace book, this volume of notes and extracts was compiled by Rev. Thomas Pargiter (d.1705), in 1667 a fellow of Lincoln College Oxford and subsequently rector of Greatworth in Northamptonshire. Pargiter has penned thematic headings in the margins of the pages for ease of use: “Of naturall life ... Of the Gospell ... Of worldly pleasures ... Of the joy of Heaven ... Envy ... Pestlilence ... Expedient actions ... Of temptations in general ... Remedies against lying ... Motives to be merciful ... Of truly wise men ... Of ye uncertainty of life ... Of women ... Of ill company ... Of Divine providence ... Of wealth ... Of matrimony ... Of gluttony ... Of formality in religion ...” The content appears to be a mixture of Pargiter's own notes and extracts from the Bible and contemporary writers including Robert Sharrock (1630-1684), Joseph Hall (1574-1656), Edward Stllingfleet (1635-1699), Walter Cradock (1606-1659), Jeremiah Burroughs (1601-1646) and Richard Capel (1586-1656). Also present is a twenty page catechism section in question and answer format, and a few pages of “English and Latin words more unusually read.” Some favourable comments concerning Pargiter's character and temperament are supplied in his funeral sermon by Rev. Nathaniel Goodwin (1676-1756), published as A sermon preach'd at the funeral of the Reverend Dr Pargiter ... (London, 1705)." Ordered from Samuel Gedge, D 9031, 2016-11-10, Catalog 23, item 32.
