Title
Costume studies for William Shakespeare's Taming of the shrew [graphic].
Produced
[London] : Robert Bööcke, [before 1892?]
Description
31 sheets : watercolor and gouache ; 27 x 15 cm
Associated name
Bööcke, Robert L., artist.
Note
Bööcke published an 8-part set of 'Shakespearian costumes' between 1889 and 1898; 'Taming of the shrew' was the third volume, issued in 1892, and it seems likely that these paintings were created before it. The costumes depicted in the paintings do not necessarily match the costumes printed in the books; for instance, Christopher Sly in 'Taming of the Shrew' is depicted as older, more slovenly, and leaning on his right arm rather than his left in the paintings.
Costume studies on heavy cardstock, in watercolor and gouache, signed and dated by artist in ink. Most captioned with character's name in pencil.
Dealer's description: Group of 31 original watercolor and gouache costume studies for male and female players, on pale grey (245x150mm) or pale blue (270x150mm) heavy cardstock, each one signed by the artist in ink, and with pencilled notations indicating the character and play. Detailed, finished, professional paintings of the main and supporting characters of 'The Taming of the Shrew' in full costume. Gently buckled; scattered light marginal foxing (only occasionally affecting the image); paper remnants on the verso from having previously been mounted. Robert L. Bööcke was the author of 'Shakespearian Costumes: Illustrations of the Whole of the Characters of Each Play, in Correct Costume, Compiled from Authentic Sources, as Given by Montfaucon, Royal Mss., Holbein, Zuccaro, Strutt, &c.' published by Samuel Miller in London, 1889, and issued in 8 parts. 'Taming of the Shrew' was issued third, and contained 32 plates, so this collection is very near complete."
