Note
From dealer's description: Issued on the authority of Charles II, this manuscript warrrant signed off by Henry Bennet, first earl of Arlington (1618-1685) in his capacity as Lord Chamberlain, ordered that Ralph Montagu (1638-1709), Master of the Great Wardrobe, should deliver to the naval commander Sir John Narborough (1640-1688) presents intended for the Pasha and Dey of Tripoli: “halfe a piece of fine black cloth & halfe a piece of fine scarlett cloth for the Basha, and halfe a piece of fine scarlett cloth & halfe a piece of fine black cloth for the Dey of that Kingdom, and for the secretarys there nyne yards of fine scarlett cloth & nine yards of fine black cloth unto each of them ...” A “piece” was actually a specific measurement of cloth (24 yards). Narborough was commanding a squadron of English ships in the Mediterranean for the defence of English shipping against north African corsairs and had signed a short-lived peace treaty with Triploi in 1676.
