Summary
A humorous review of a performance of Hamlet at the "Theatre Royal, Shellgate". The performance had been advertised with Hamlet to be played "by a well-known amateur from London", who apparently missed his train to Shellgate. The theatre's proprietor "Mr. Jowl", a retired actor, stepped into the role instead. The audience demanded an encore of the fight between Hamlet and Laertes, causing the author to remark, "It is the first and last time I have seen Hamlet die twice on the same night".
