[Memorial ring inscribed "The Cruell seas remembr. took him in Novembr. 92"] [realia].
Variant title
Box title: Memorial ring in gold
Created/published
[England?], [1692?]
Description
1 ring
Note
Year "92" in the inscription probably refers to 1692, not 1592, based on the wording and lettering style. Gold ring has large clear rose-cut crystal set above an image of a skeleton and the initials "RC" with " "The Cruell seas remembr. took him in Novembr. 92" engraved around the inside in the opposite direction. As described by J.O. Halliwell-Phillipps: "A gold memorial ring, dated 1592 [sic], with the following curious posy inside, 'The cruell seas, remember / Took him in November.' On the top under a pebble is a death's head and a skeleton. This curious relic thus becomes a double illustration of Shakespeare, of the posy of a ring, and of 'a death's face in a ring' mentioned in Love's Labour's Lost." This is a PRELIMINARY RECORD. It may contain incorrect information. Please email catalog@folger.edu for assistance. Title devised by Folger staff.
