Note
Title devised by cataloger.
Edited by Charles Jennens.
The plays are separately paged and signed and at least Lear was separately issued. There is no general title. But the 2 volumes properly constitute an edition of the Plays, for there is a general frontispiece portrait of the author, and it is known that Jennens planned to do the whole. The textual readings are thorough and valuable, Jennens being in this respect far in advance of his time (Folger card catalog).
All title pages with statement: "collated with the old and modern editions."
All imprints save Lear read: "London : Printed by W. Bowyer and J. Nichols, and sold by W. Owen, between the temple-gates, Fleet-Street", with imprints dated 1773 or 1774.
Engraved frontispiece portrait lettered: R. Earlom fecit. Additional play engravings alternately lettered: F. Hayman del.; Ravenet sculp., C. Grignion sculp., W.W. Ryland sculp.
Plays also issued individually.
Plays have half-titles and frontispieces.
Not in ESTC as a set [17Nov2011]; see ESTC T68019 (Lear); ESTC T68020 (Hamlet); ESTC T142666 (Macbeth); ESTC T43500 (Othello); ESTC T29287 (Julius Caesar).
See Maslen & Lancaster. Bowyer ledgers: 4965 (Hamlet); 4966 (Macbeth); 4967 (Othello); 5025 (Julius Caesar).
