Artist: Bruyer was an engraver, illustrator, watercolor painter and ceramist. He exhibited in Paris from 1907 to 1937, and illustrated works of Molier, La Bruyere, Shakespeare, etc.

Item is on a sheet with gold border. Signed at bottom right: Georges Bruyer.

Provenance: Item is bound in an edition of Shakespeare's Hamlet. "Hamlet ... traduction de Georges Duval. Bois et eaux-fortes originales de Georges Bruyer. Paris, A. Blaizot, 1913." This copy is specially bound by René Kieffer, with 1 original watercolor and 4 rejected etchings inserted. 20 copies (numbered 1-20) of the printed work were to contain an original watercolor by the artist and three states of the engravings. The Folger copy is number 134, but it includes a watercolor and was apparently purchased with additional states of the engravings. Card in Mrs. Folger's file notes that the work was bought from Librairie Dechennes in 1924, cat. 14, no. 198. Description in cat. is not clear, but it must include the portfolio of etchings in two states which is cataloged separately as ART Vol. c101.

Subject: Hamlet is kneeling before the ghost who has his arm outstretched, holding a sword. This is a different scene from the etchings in Act I, scene V of the printed work in which this watercolor appears.
