Note
Artist: Clint was a portrait painter, engraver and miniature painter who was popular for his theatrical portraits. He was elected ARA in 1821 and exhibited at the R.A. 1802-1845. DNB notes that a portrait by him of Kean as Richard III is part of the Matthews Collection at the Garrick Club, however it is not noted in the 1936 catalog of the collection. This drawing is after a painting by Clint (see below) but may have been the work of another artist.
Full figure portrait, kneeling to left with right hand on chest and left hand pointing to sword on ground in front of him. Unsigned.
History: An engraving of Kean as Richard III, after a painting by G. Clint is listed in Harv. Cat. of dram. ports. as no. 125 under Kean's entry. FSL has copies of this engraving (ART File K24.4 no.34-38) and an additional copy is added to the same volume this drawing is housed in. The engraving is usually dated 1822 and noted as being engraved by R. Cooper. It was published as a plate to Tallis's dramatic magazine.
Provenance: Item is housed before p. 315 in volume 12 of a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's Works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance information see entry for "Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer."
