Note
Artist: Atkinson was noted for his spirited battle pieces. He exhibited a few Shakespearean subjects at the R.A. and his illustrations for the Seven ages of man were exhibited at the Watercolor Society in 1812.
Both drawings have been glued to the mat board page of the volume. Underneath the drawing, on the mat is written the play title, act, scene and quotation. On the back of the page, in the lower left hand corner in ink is written the artist's name. On the King Henry drawing, however, the initials are written J.T. rather than J.A. There is no signature of the artist himself on the drawings.
Provenance: Items are housed in a bound volume, the cover of which reads: Illustrations to Shakespeare. Original drawings by J.M. Wright. There are 22 drawings in the volume, 18 by Wright, 2 by Atkinson and 2 by Robert Smirke. Volume was purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros., Sept. 1920. (Formerly ART Inv. 290, nos. 19-20).
Subject: The first item illustrates act IV, sc. 6 of King Henry V, The death of York and Suffolk. The second item illustrates act V, sc. 4 of King Richard III, the battle of Bosworth Field.
