Artist: Work appears to be that of an amateur.
Provenance: The drawings have been tipped into the "Notes" section of Hamlet in the 1844 London edition of the works of Shakespeare, illustrated by Kenny Meadows. The edition was published in 3 volumes but this copy has been expanded to six through extra illustration. The set is listed in the Sotheby auction catalogue of the library of Henry Sanford Bicknell, June 9, 1881, item no. 550 and the volumes bear Bicknell's bookplate. The volumes were purchased by the Folgers from a sale held at the Anderson Galleries, N.Y. in 1901, cat. no. 72, item no. 290.
Subject: Drawings depict Ophelia surrounded by 3 or 4 figures which are reaching towards her or grasping her. The second drawing depicts Ophelia in a shroud and 4 spirits in clouds.
