Note
Artist: Watercolor is tipped in across from a page which has an engraving of the same musicians which is signed on the plate "Sly." The name Sly is found on many of the engravings in the same volume, and in other volumes of the same set. It is uncertain whether Sly is the engraver or the artist. Houfe lists a B. Sly as being a topographer who contributed drawings to Knight's London, 1841. The Sly signature, however, sometimes appears to have an S in front of it rather than a B.
History: As noted above, an engraving of this drawing was used as an illustration to Romeo and Juliet in Knight's Pictorial edition of the plays of Shakespeare, London : Knight & Co. [n.d.].
Provenance: Item is inlaid after p. 66 in volume 6 of an extra illustrated copy of Knight's Pictorial edition of Shakespeare. For further provenance information see the entry for "Anonymous. True loveknot."
Subject: Drawing is used to illustrate the line in act IV, sc. 5 of Romeo and Juliet, "Musicians, o musicians."
This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance.
Title from penciled note on back. Pictures three musicians, one playing a small harp. Unsigned.
