Note
Artist: This drawing is taken after a portrait which has been credited to the artist Cornelius Janssen Van Ceulen.
Bust portrait to left, with high lace collar. Unsigned.
History: The artist probably copied the work from an engraving of the Janssen portrait which is considered a doubtful portrait of Shakespeare. The original portrait was acquired by the collector Jennens around 1760 and has been said to be a painting of Shakespeare's period, later altered to look more like Shakespeare.
Provenance: Item is inlaid after the preface in the 1st volume of a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's Work, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance see entry for "Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer."
