History: Unable to find an engraving of the design in FSL file of loose engravings.
Provenance: Item has been inlaid before p. 227 of vol. 2, pt. 2 of an extra illustrated copy of the Works of William Shakespeare ... edited by Howard Staunton with illustrations by Sir John Gilbert R.A., London : Routledge & Sons, 1881. This edition was originally published in 15 volumes and has been extended to 39 through grangerizing. The copy is no. 57 out of the limited 1000 copies printed. Volumes are bound in 1/2 red levant morocco and bear the bookplate of Robert Hoe. The set was purchased by the Folgers from the sale of the library of Robert Hoe, held through the Anderson Galleries, Nov. 18, 1912. Set was no. 2905 in the catalog of that sale. A similar set, expanded to 40 volumes and bound in 1/2 blue levant morocco was purchased by the Folgers from the Rosenbach Co. who obtained it from the sale of the library of James Ellsworth. It is also extra illustrated and contains many of the same prints that have been added to this copy. Possibly the same grangerizer was at work on both copies. The bindings appear to be the work of the same person.
Subject: Drawing depicts Romeo in the foreground with his foot on the dead body of Paris. Romeo has the vial of poison lifted to his mouth. Juliet is seen in the background, in a light wash, lying in her tomb, presumably dead.

This small rectangular drawing is labeled in ink underneath with the above noted title, on the piece of paper on which the watercolor has been executed. Unsigned.
