Note
Artist: Drawing appears to be after the school of Shakespearean illustration characterized by Stothard and his follower J.M. Wright. (More closely related to other watercolors attributed to Wright in the Folger collection).
Drawing pictures a man, almost full back to the viewer, on the left and a woman on the right, resting her hand on a chair. The two are standing in an archway. Penciled note "2.307" on the drawing itself, appears to have been added by the grangerizer since it refers to the position of the item in the volume. Unsigned.
Provenance: Item has been inlaid after p. 306 of Taming of the shrew which is vol. 2, part 3 of an extra illustrated copy of the Works of Shakespeare, 1881 edition, edited by Staunton. For complete volume and provenance information see entry for "Anonymous. Romeo taking poison for the loss of Juliet."
Subject: The subject has been identified as a scene from Taming of the shrew because of its location in a copy of the play. It is tipped into act II, scene 1 and illustrates Petruchio's attempt to convince Katharina to marry him.
