Bust portrait, to right, wearing a hat and right hand on chin. Title written underneath, unsigned.

History: Not listed in Cat. of eng. Brit. ports. in the British Museum though two others of Dashwood are noted.

Provenance: Item is found in the 11th volume of an extra-illustrated copy of Fitzgerald's Life of David Garrick, before p. 141. The volumes were extra-illustrated in 1903 by Alexander Meyrick Broadley, expanded from 2 volumes to 17. The set was purchased by the Folgers from Albert Myers & Co. (cat. no. 236, item no. 117) in 1923.

Subject: Sir Francis Dashwood, later the Baron Le Despencer (1708-1781), was a noted rake of the eighteenth century, the founder of the Hell Fire Club of Medmenham Abbey, a member of Parliament and Chancellor of the Exchequer.
