Provenance: Items have been added to an extra-illustrated copy of Mrs. Stones Chronicles of Fashion, 1845. The work was purchased by the Library in 1959 from Parker & Son, cat. no. 148, item no. 300. The drawings are mentioned in the catalog description but no artist is named.
Small tracings or sketches on thin paper. Items are neither labeled nor signed and vary in measurement (see below).
Subject: The subjects of the drawings are as follows: 1) 17th century man and woman, the woman seated on a chair (3 1/2 x 3 1/2 in., after p. 64) 2) Half length of a man on horseback, only the head and neck of the horse is depicted (3 1/2 x 2 3/8 in., after p. 72) 3) 5 figures in Elizabethan dress; a man and woman seated, possibly playing a game, and two men and one woman standing (4 x 4 1/4 in., after p. 176) 4) The back view of a 17th century boy, holding hat in one hand and a leash attached to a dog in the other (4 1/8 x 3 1/2 in., after p. 192). It is presumed that the drawings are intended to illustrate costumes due to the subject matter of the book to which they have been added.
