Note
Artist: Watercolor is tipped in across from a page which has an engraving of the tomb of Juliet, without the figure of the artist, signed on the plate S or B Sly. Houfe lists a B. Sly as being a topographer who contributed drawings to Knight's London, 1841. Sly may have been the artist of this watercolor.
History: As noted above, a similar drawing of the tomb, lacking the figure of the artist sketching, was engraved as an illustration to the "Supplementary notice" to Romeo and Juliet in Knight's Pictorial edition of the plays of Shakespeare, published in London, no date.
Provenance: Item is tipped in after p. 76 in volume 6 of an extra illustrated copy of Knight's Pictorial edition of Shakespeare, edited by Charles Knight, London : Knight & Co. [n.d.]. For further provenance information see the entry for "Anonymous. True loveknot."
Subject: Drawing is supposed to illustrate an actual spot in Verona, designated by the Veronese as the tomb of Juliet. For further explanation see Knight's Pictorial.
